What are Lion’s Mane Mushrooms?

The lion’s mane mushroom, Hericium erinaceus, is an edible mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group, and it doesn’t look anything like a stereotypical 'shroom. Missing are the stalk and cap we’ve come to associate with most fungi; instead, fluffy white spines cascade down its bulbous base, resembling, well, a lion’s mane. These mushrooms tend to grow on hardwood trees and are native to Asia, Europe, and North America. Stateside, lion's mane mushrooms typically fruit in late summer and early fall.

Health Benefits of Lion’s Mane Mushrooms

Lion’s mane mushrooms are renowned for their health benefits and have been used in Chinese medicine since ancient times. Most notably, they are said to give your brain a boost thanks at least in part to two compounds they contain, hericenones and erinacines, both of which help to stimulate the growth and protection of brain cells. Some research shows lion’s mane mushrooms may improve cognitive function (i.e. memory, focus, and clarity) while protecting from cognitive decline, and pre-clinical studies show they may help treat neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

These multitasking mushrooms are also purported to have benefits beyond brain health. They are rich in anti-inflammatory antioxidants and may help prevent ulcers in the digestive tract, reduce risk of heart disease, manage diabetes symptoms, fight cancer, and boost the immune system. Lion’s mane might even be able to help your mood. In some studies, the mushroom has been shown to alleviate symptoms of mild depression and anxiety while improving sleep.

How to Use Lion’s Mane Mushrooms in the Kitchen

As cookbook author and Asian food expert Chef Katie Chin recently told Shroomboom, lion’s mane mushrooms have a taste and texture similar to that of lobster or shrimp. They are naturally flavorful and have a spongy consistency, so when cooking, it’s best to allow the mushrooms to take center stage without dousing them in too many scene-stealing seasonings. They can be sautéed, added to soups and broths, or transformed into vegan crab cakes or lobster rolls.
