Everyone's favorite mood board, Pinterest, says there will be a significant rise in interest in mushroom decor—or “mush-rooms"—this year.
Each December, Pinterest releases trend predictions for the upcoming year based on data collected and analyzed from user behavior on the platform. The company's latest report highlights mush-rooms as a subset of the “weirdcore” design trend, wherein “anything but ordinary” goes. “During lockdowns, people needed new ways to express themselves creatively without leaving home,” the report reads. “So, they turned their bedrooms into creative havens and experimented with aesthetics like ‘weirdcore decor.’ This form of maximalist self-expression will only continue to rise in the year ahead.”
Pinterest's 'shroom-specific prediction is informed by a 170% increase in interest in fantasy mushroom art, a 35% increase in interest in vintage mushroom decor, and a 77% increase in interest in DIY mushroom projects on the platform. While we’re big fans of all three categories, we think a little vintage 'shroom shopping is a good way to start 2023 off on a planet-friendly note. Shop our picks below, or if you’re pinching pennies in the new year, try your hand at making your own mushroom art, such as these easy DIY mushroom shelves, this mushroom book art, or these viral TikTok paper mushrooms.
These charming 1970s coffee mugs are from Arnel’s, a ceramics company best known for its mushroom designs. If you like them, Etsy is teeming with other 'shroomy kitchen objects made by the quirky company, such as cutting boards, serving dishes, soup tureens, and much more.
These whimsical wall hangings are also from Arnel’s circa 1973 and would make for the perfect addition to any mush-room. (This four-piece set from the 1980s is cute, too.)
This adorable mushroom lamp from the 1970s was designed to look like the magic mushrooms that may have inspired many of our modern-day holiday traditions.
We almost can’t believe this unique piece of kitchenware exists. Though it has a fairly ‘70s vibe, the seller says this object harkens back to the 1960s. Whichever decade it’s from, we’re extremely jealous of whomever finds a place for it in their home.
