Freshly Foraged: Nick Fouquet x Made With Reishi™

Celebrity designer releases revolutionary mushroom-leather hats.

Attention 'shroomy shoppers! Celebrity-beloved luxury hat designer Nick Fouquet has released a capsule collection of first-to-market mushroom-leather hats, and there is nothing granola about them. Fouquet, who studied environmental science and sustainable development in college, partnered with materials innovator MycoWorks to create three toppers made with the company’s proprietary Reishi™ material. Each handsome unisex design is named after a 'shroom species. The Coprinus and the Morchella are both trimmed in the mushroom leather substitute, and the Boletus, a bucket hat, is made entirely from Reishi™.

We’ve previously reported on mushroom leather in depth, but the TL;DR version is that several fabric solutions companies have developed mycelium-based alternatives to cow and PVC-based leathers (a.k.a. pleathers). Mycelium, the root-like structure of a fungus, is a highly sustainable material. Its cultivation requires far fewer resources than cow leather and is less harmful to the environment than pleather. It has a super-fast life cycle, is infinitely renewable, and can be grown in specific shapes to minimize cutting-room-floor waste. Each of these attributes make mushroom leather an attractive option for those in the fashion industry looking to reduce the significant carbon footprint of their products. MycoWorks is a major player in this space, and the company says their innovative leather is even more environmentally friendly than that of its peers in that it’s 100% plastic-free and biodegradable.

With this launch, Fouquet joins other luxury brands in working with mushroom leather. Hermés and Stella McCartney have both incorporated it into their collections, and Danish it-brand GANNI has also adopted mycelium leather to help fulfill its promise to abandon animal products. At present, the material is almost exclusively used by such high-end designers, but the hope within both the alt-materials and fashion industries is that increased demand will make 'shroom leather more accessible to fashion brands across the price spectrum and become a more affordable option for all conscientious consumers.

In the meantime, it’s good to see luxury designers setting such a sustainable trend, and these latest additions to Fouquet’s buzzy line are worth the investment. Shop the designer’s groundbreaking new toppers below.
